Blackjack

All kinds of card games have been played for centuries. Nowadays, casino players like to play for a game of poker, baccarat and of course blackjack. The advantage of blackjack is that the basic rules are a lot easier than with poker, for example. This allows any card games enthusiast to join the (virtual) blackjack table and see what it brings good luck. As with all other casino games, you have to know what the rules are and what to look out for. Fortunately, we are here to help you with this.

Looking for the black farmer, or the black jack

Blackjack is the official name of the casino game that is also known as twenty-one. Little is known about the history of this card game. Nevertheless, it is generally assumed that the game has conquered the rest of the world from Spain and France. This card game occurs for the first time in the stories of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547 – 1616). For the emergence of the name blackjack we have to cross the ocean again towards America. Because in order to make the game more popular, an extra bonus was added to the game when the spades of bait and a black farmer (in English called ‘black jack’) came together. The bonus has now disappeared, but the name has always remained.

With which cards do you get the 21 points?

In blackjack you take on the dealer of the casino, which is called the bank in this game .You and the bank has the same goal: to get as close as possible to the 21 points. The person who performs this mission best wins. But watch out! Do you exceed 21 points? Then you are bankrupt and you have automatically lost the game. In the event of a draw, you get the bet back and you may try again.

This game explanation tells you in a nutshell what is expected of you. Still, there is more to blackjack look than you might think. To understand the game well, we first look at the most important element of blackjack. And of course those are the cards. All cards have their own value. The numbered cards (2 to 10) have the value on them. In addition, the farmer, wife and gentleman are also involved. These cards are all worth 10 points. The bait fulfills a special role in blackjack. When this appears, 1 or 11 points are added to the cards that are already there. The bait gets the value that is most favorable to you. Moreover, that value can change during the game of blackjack. Imagine starting the game with a 6 and a bait. In that case, the ace can earn 11 points so that your total comes to 17. This is a number of points with which you can win, but you can also lose very well. It is worth the risk to request an extra card. If this becomes, for example, a 5 or higher , the value of the ace automatically changes to 1 point.Otherwise you are bankrupt.

These are the basic rules for blackjack

A game of blackjack starts with the distribution of the cards. As a player you get two open cards for you. The dealer, on the other hand, gives himself an open card and a closed card. ‘Open’ in this case means that it is visible to everyone which cards are available. ‘Closed’ means that the card is face down. The dealer’s card will only be visible when you have made the decision on your turn or you are not playing. You do not know exactly which cards the dealer has. Because of this, it remains a guess whether you ultimately need that extra card to beat the casino.

Every player naturally hopes that on that first round a 10 (or farmer, wife or lord) and an ace will be on the table. You immediately have 21 points and the profit is undoubtedly yours for you. You will then be paid the stake 1.5 times. No matter how beautiful this sounds, the chance is of course much greater that you do not immediately get the ultimate number of 21 points. In that case, you have two options: pass or continue. If you fit, you bet that the dealer has fewer points than you. This is, for example, a sensible decision when you have 18, 19 or 20 points. Do you think the number of points is too low to win? Then you go ahead and ask for an extra card.

The advantage for you as a player is that you decide whether you want extra cards or not. The dealer does not have much to choose. There are fixed rules when a card is added and when it is not. A total number of points of 16 or less means that the dealer draws an extra card for himself. As soon as the number of points is 17 or higher, the dealer stops playing. This fact can influence the decision whether you take an extra card or not. Because if the dealer has 16 points, the chance is real that he will be above 21 points. Think carefully at each turn and do not just pay attention to your own cards before you make a decision.

Split, double and other blackjack terms

Each casino game has its own terminology. Also in blackjack it is useful to know what it is about. These are the most important terms you come across:

  • Buying and fitting: buying simply means asking for an extra card from the dealer. If you fit, you bet that the number of points is enough to win.
  • Doubling: does the number of points of the first two cards amount to 9, 10 or 11?Then you get the opportunity to double your bet. The chance of a nice number of points is great, but there is a catch: you only get one card from the dealer. Do you dare to take the risk?
  • Split: when the first two cards that are in front of you have the same value, you can split. You then get two separate hands with cards so you also have two chances to win (or lose course).
  • Insure: if the dealer’s first card is an ace, then the chance of blackjack is relatively high. Here you can insure yourself by placing half of your bet. Will it be blackjack? Then you get the double amount of the second bet back. You have lost the original bet, but the ‘insurance’ compensates this loss somewhat.

For the advanced player: counting cards

It is, of course, pure coincidence what cards appear in front of you. But does that mean that you can only win the game with a good dose of luck and the hope that you do well to ask for an extra card or not? There are blackjack players who say ‘no’ to this completely. They try to outwit the casino by counting the cards.

There are different ways to count cards. One of the most popular strategies is the so-called Hi-Lo system. Each card receives 1, 0 or -1. The value 1 is reserved for the numbered cards 2 through 6. Cards 7 to 9 get a 0 as value, and the tens, farmer, wife, lord and ace are assigned -1. With this system you can keep an eye on which cards are there or still a lot of high or low cards in the game. The casino is usually in favor if there are more low cards left, while you are more likely to be blackjack when there are still many high cards in the game. Knowledge of the remaining cards helps you decide when to buy, fit or double.

With the first few cards it is of course difficult to base your strategy on a counting system. After all, there are few cards from the game. The casino only goes round after round with the same set of cards. That offers opportunities. Unfortunately there are more cards than the 52 in a package. Casinos work with multiple packages of cards at the same time. As a result, not everyone is convinced that counting cards is really useful to increase the chances of winning.

Play blackjack in the live casino

Whether you count cards or trust that you are making the right decisions anyway: blackjack is a game that will undoubtedly bring you a lot of gaming pleasure. Virtual blackjack gives you the chance to get to know the game well and maybe even get some nice money. Yet you will miss the excitement of a real casino. Blackjack is fortunately one of those games that you can also play in the live casino. You then take place via a video connection at a real blackjack table and the dealer shares the cards live. So you do not have to leave your house to get that special feeling that the entry of a casino entails.
