777 was established in 2012 as the online platform of Casino de Spa, one of the oldest land-based casinos in the world. Its launch was driven by several strategic, commercial, and legal reasons.

Revised Gambling Act

In 2011, Belgium introduced a revised Gambling Act that allowed existing land-based casinos to apply for an online license. However, the law required that online casino platforms be tied to a physical, licensed casino. By 2012, it had become clear that the gambling market was rapidly moving online. Casino de Spa saw this as an opportunity they couldn’t ignore which is why they launched an online branch: Casino777 for casino and Bet777 for sportsbetting.

The shift towards an online presence came with many benefits such as lower operational costs compared to a land-based casino, attracting users from beyond their physical location, reaching younger audiences and expanding the brand to sportsbetting as well.

Casino 777 license

Casino 777 holds an A+ license in Belgium which is issued by the Belgian Gaming Commission and is exclusive for platforms connected to physical casinos (in this case, Casino de Spa). To acquire a license, bookmakers and online casinos need to respect strict rules such as identity verification, game transparency, betting limits and other measures to secure responsible gambling.

Although 777 was established to gain an online presence in Belgium, the brand has expanded itself gradually outside of Belgium as well. Today, 777 is active in for example the Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain.

777 and Circus

Circus, which is another well-known brand from Belgium, operates as a separate brand with a separate platform from 777. Though, both brands are owned by the same group (Ardent/Gaming 1). Just like 777, Circus has expanded its market far outside of the Belgian borders. Casino de Spa seems therefore to have made a smooth transition to online markets maintaining its dominant position as a gambling icon, both land-based and online.
